"A Dickens Christmas"Watercolor by Carol Hubbard, 1999Christmas customs throughout the world are as rich as the cultures themselves. Garlands of evergreens and flowering poinsettias are among just a few of the Christmas symbols in this watercolor. Ancient cultures used evergreens to ward off woodland spirits and bring good luck. For Christians, evergreens symbolize God's Promise of everlasting life. The poinsettia, also known as Flame Leaf or Flower of the Holy Night, was first brought to America over one hundred years ago from Central America. The legend tells of an impoverished girl who had no gift to offer the Blessed Mary. She picked some roadside flowers and placed them at the foot of the Virgin's stature. The plant turned into brilliant blood-red blossoms. |
